Print 3D models of Evolve’s Hunters, Monsters
Right now, you can print up 3D figures of the Hunters and Monsters from Evolve. All you need are the 3D files at EvolveGame.com – which we’re giving you for free – and access to a 3D printer. Keep reading for details…or just watch this video and get to it.
GRAB THE ASSET FILES
This is the no-brainer. All you need to do is go to EvolveGame.com and under the “About” section, look up your favorite Hunter or Monster. Or all of them. Scroll down past the character description on the right-hand column and you’ll find the link to grab the 3D file.
IF YOU ALREADY OWN A 3D PRINTER…
You’re covered. Maybe you already own some flavor of MakerBot Replicator and you have all the supplies you need.
Your next step is sending that design to your 3D printer with the .STL (“Standard Tessellation Language”) file extension. (STL files dice up the three-dimensional image information so the printer can easily process all the data.)
IF YOU DON’T OWN A 3D PRINTER…
No problem. You can submit and purchase fully-printed models of your own at places such as Sculpteo, Shapeways and Thingiverse. Just log in to any of these sites, upload the files and they will walk you through the rest of the process…including what to use for your creations (Common materials include paper, plastic, rubber and metals).
A QUICK WALKTHROUGH OF 3D PRINTING
If you’re curious to learn more about how 3D printing works, check out this story over at Mashable. We’ll spare you the lecture, but it does a pretty good job of breaking down the process. The really short version: Think of the way an inkjet printer runs multiple passes over a page to shoot out a picture. Same concept, but with superheated bioplastics (used in the MakerBots) layered in multiple passes to form a shape.
When you’re done printing those pint-sized Hunters and Monsters, go ahead and paint them up…or create your own action scenes. Just make sure to use #4v1 so that we can see what you do with yours.
Think of this as something to keep you busy until Evolve ships for PC, PS4 and Xbox One on October 21st.
